Note: Due to the limited funding available and the total amount of reimbursement requests received, a proration process has been implemented to help ensure that all eligible applicants receive a portion of their requested reimbursement.

In accordance with the funding priorities outlined in C.R.S. § 29-5-301, reimbursements will be distributed as follows:

• Volunteer and Part-Time Employees: Departments requesting reimbursement for volunteer and/or part-time employees will receive 100% of their eligible reimbursement request. 
• Full-Time Employees: Departments requesting reimbursement for full-time employees will receive reimbursement at a prorated amount based on the funding remaining after the volunteer and part-time reimbursement request has been fulfilled.

This approach allows the program to prioritize volunteer and part-time coverage while distributing the remaining available funding toward full-time reimbursement requests.

The Firefighter Cancer Cardiac Benefit reimbursement program offered through the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) is now accepting applications for volunteers and part-time firefighters who were not previously eligible.

As a result of HB24-1219, coverage is mandatory for full-time, part-time, and volunteer firefighters.

DOLA has moved the application program to the Formulaic Portal. All new applications and supporting documentation must now be submitted through this portal.

Applications must be received by September 25, 2026 to be considered for the first wave of funding. Volunteer and part-time firefighter reimbursement will be prioritized first, followed by full-time firefighters as funding allows.
